Service includes insertion or replacement of a long-term urinary catheter using sterile equipment. Typically used for urinary retention (retention in the bladder). It is possible that complications may arise during the procedure, if so, the physician assistant will ask you to go to the nearest State Hospital emergency department or call the EMS. The most common complications are urethral stricture, as well as an overfilled bladder and muscle spasms. Service also includes education of the patient and/or their relatives about long-term catheter care, the importance of adequate fluid intake, and alternatives if the catheter is intended for long-term use.
